Rob Senderoff demonstrates what it takes to elevate a program. By watching Senderoff's implementation of a highly competitive practice, Coach Senderoff reveals the secrets to his success. You will be able to utilize the organization of this practice to help your program understand what it takes to compete at a high level. In addition, he gives you insight into his offensive concepts that have long made Coach Senderoff's team one of the most potent in NCAA Division I Basketball.

Individual Skill Work

Coach Senderoff begins his practice with some individual skill work. You will see his assistants working with the guards and forwards on building their skills through breakdown drills of their offense. Learn their "Away B," "Ricky," "Double," and "Middle" actions. This is just a warmup for their players.

Competitive Drills

Next, Coach Senderoff cranks up his practice by getting into 1v1 competitive drills. It begins out with some basic 1v1 from the wing, but quickly morphs into a hyper-competitive segment that involves rebounding into full court 1v1. This will be a must-add series for any coach looking to enhance their defense!

After finishing the 1v1 series, Coach Senderoff goes into some transition drills that emphasize advantage/disadvantage situations.  The full court sessions progress from 2v2 to 3v3 to 4v4 eventually ending in 5v5 action. The continuous action will not only make your team play faster and communicate, but it will get them into tremendous shape.

5v5 Half Court

Once Coach Senderoff has his team rolling, he transitions into the half court. The emphasis is on his offense. During this time, Senderoff will highlight the actions his team is focusing on.  One of the best parts of this segment is seeing how the breakdown drills done at the beginning of practice are incorporated into the "Away B" and "Away C" segments in 5v5.

5v5 Full Court

Coach Senderoff continues his video by getting his team into the full court. This controlled full court allows for his players to get reps and for teaching to occur.  This will give you plenty of ideas on how to incorporate this type of session into your practice.

Press Offense

The video concludes with a look at Coach Senderoff's press offense. You will see how Coach Senderoff incorporates passing drills into his 5v0 press attack to lead a multi-faceted drill for his team. These drills are generally done as warmups to his practice.

Coach Senderoff is one of the very best in college basketball today. This video gives you insight into what has long made him successful at every stop and will give you plenty of great drills and practice ideas for your seasons ahead!

Grand Canyon University Head Women's Basketball Coach;
Drury University Head Coach from 2014 to 2020;
2x WBCA Division II Coach of the Year (2019, 2020);
Undefeated season (32-0) in 2020;
2019 NCAA D II Final Four;
Second-highest career winning percentage among active women's Division I coaches (.873);
In 2020-2021 season, GCU ranked 2nd nationally for steals per game (13.4 per game) and finished 3rd nationally in steals per game in 2021-2022 (12.6 per game);

With a well-earned reputation as one of the best defensive coaches in all of women’s basketball, the head women’s coach has guided every program she’s been at to the top of the rankings in defense. Whether it’s her impossibly gaudy 67-1 record over two seasons at Division II Drury University, to posting an .873 winning percentage in two seasons at Grand Canyon University, it’s hard to argue against this truth - Miller’s defense has wreaked havoc in college basketball!

In this highly detailed video presentation, viewers are treated to a special inside look at the drills that Miller uses to build and refine her defensive system – including, individual defensive drills, team defense drills, build-up drills and a valuable lesson in defensive terminology that goes hand in hand with the coaching points and teaching aspects of each drill.

Terminology Lesson, Drills For On-The-Ball Defense

To begin the video presentation, Miller provides viewers with a rundown of her defensive terminology and explains the ‘why’s behind the what’s.’ Throughout the entire video, the coach continuously outlines the rationale behind what they do and how they do it for each drill. This overview on terminology is a terrific way to kick off the presentation, as it helps viewers to understand the concepts that get reinforced in subsequent drills. Miller also shares some teaching tools to get your players focused on the skills being utilized and the tasks-at-hand that are emphasized in each drill, which allows the players to work with high levels of intensity.

Miller shows three phases of on-the-ball defense with a truly unique version of the Zig-Zag Drill. Through each phase of the drill, a different aspect of her defensive philosophy and the step-by-step build-up to the defense is shown as a process. Viewers will also learn how to teach players excellent techniques for guarding crossover dribble moves in the full court, how to get turns for sudden traps and how to avoid fouling.

Best of all, the great drills shown in this segment are universally applicable and serve as a way to build up your defense – regardless of the defense you play!

Drills For Half-Court Defense

Next, Miller shows off the key drills she uses for creating a relentless half-court defense, as well as what she calls ‘skinnies’ – or drills and skills work emphasized within a drill.

The Denial Drill gets your players working ‘on a string’ in unison and teaches how to deny entry passes once the ball is picked up. The Super Denial Drill is a ‘skinny’ that teaches your players how to guard and how to recover against backdoor cuts, as well as techniques needed to guard the high post and wing. Another ‘skinny’ shown within the denial drills is the proper technique players must use when jumping to the ball and taking charges.

The One Pass Away drill is broken down into 5 defensive phases and illustrates how Miller builds her half-court defense. The phases are broken down into 1) stunting, 2) stunting-and-tracing the ball, 3) stunting-and-stealing, 4) securing a steal, and, 5) converting from defense to offense.

Miller wraps up this stellar defensive drill showcase by showing viewers the ‘Take Mine Drill,’ which is guaranteed to add a deeper layer of intensity to your defense, with concepts emphasized that include pressuring passing lanes, taking away backdoor cuts, keys to switching and preventing an on-the-ball defender from getting beaten off the dribble.

If you want an array of tools that will ramp up your team’s defense and add more turnovers to your defensive stat column, then this is the video for you. Miller shows why she is considered a defensive mastermind in this jam-packed instructional video!

Back-to-Back Final Four appearances (2014-15);
2006 National Champions;
2002 AP National Coach of the Year; 2002 USBWA Women's National Coach of the Year; 4x Conference Coach of the Year

Zone defenses are used at all levels of basketball to help stop opposing offenses. However, few teams use zones on a consistent basis because coaches don't know how to defend a handful of key situations using a zone defense.

In this video, 2006 NCAA Championship coach Brenda Frese shows you all the tactics you need to run the 1-2-2 defense. Coach Frese details how to install the 1-2-2 zone, the coverages within the zone, defending seven situations within the zone defense, as well as how to defend against three offense sets within the 1-2-2.

Installation and Coverages

Frese takes you step-by-step through what all five players' responsibilities are within the 1-2-2 match-up zone. You will see how:

  • The 1-guard or "boss man" dictates the top of the zone defense
  • To protect the paint and force jump shots
  • To create defensive triangles
  • To defend when players get beat and are out of position

Defending Multiple Fronts

Coach Frese shows how to defend a 2-1-2 front, 1-4 high set, and 4-out 1-in set using her match-up zone defense. Demonstrations include:

  • The 7-on-5 drill to help teach defensive rotations
  • How to front the post when the ball is in the corner, while still preventing the lob over the top
  • How to prevent two players from guarding the same person
  • How to get your players to move on the pass instead of the catch

Defending Special Situations

Through the use of game film and on-court demonstration, you will see seven special situations that arise when using the 1-2-2 match-up zone. Frese teaches you how to stop a star player from receiving the ball in the match-up zone, as well as how to guard against high post flashes within the zone.

Additionally, Frese explains how to guard against dribble penetration, how to stop cutting action to the weak and strong sides of the court, how to defend against ball and middle screens, how to defend against skip passes, and how to trap the corners from your 1-2-2 alignment.

Coach Frese shows how effective the use of a 1-2-2 zone can be whether it be defending inbound situations, defending the high post or trapping in corners. Frese walks you through how to install, implement and win with a smothering 1-2-2 match-up zone!

Vance Walberg: Mastering the Dribble Drive Attack Offense

with Vance Walberg,
Clovis West (CA) High School Head Coach;
former Sacramento Kings (NBA) Assistant Coach;
Creator of the Innovative Dribble Drive Attack Offense,
former Fresno City College Head Coach - 2005 California JC Undefeated State Champions

Vance Walberg's Dribble Drive offense has taken the basketball world by storm. An idea 10 years ago, this system has evolved into an offensive attack adopted by John Calipari, Larry Brown, Lawrence Frank and hundreds of coaches of all levels all over the world. Based on a unique two point guard (attackers) set, this attack is complemented by two wings and a rim-running post player. The offense features two unconventional ideas: there are no screens and the post player runs to the weak side of the floor. Both features create more space for dribble penetration. Walberg breaks down each player's movement on the floor according to ball penetration. As players react to penetration they move into drag, drop and rack zones. The goal is to create spacing and gaps and to get to the rack. Walberg also teaches middle and baseline penetration and the kick-back option that can produce open 3-point shots or open drives to the basket. In addition, Walberg goes through his "Daily 45 Drills," which he runs the first 45 minutes of each practice. These fast moving drills teach the fundamentals needed to run the Dribble Drive Attack Offense - including his famous "Blood Drills." These drills focus on shooting, passing, footwork, cutting, catching and pivoting. Walberg demonstrates every part of the Dribble Drive Attack in various 3-on-2, 2-on-1 full court breakdown drills. Throughout, he highlights the key drills and teaching points he uses to build the offense. Sports Illustrated calls Vance Walberg "the Master" of the Dribble Drive Offense and one of the top innovators in the game of basketball today. Now you can learn this fun and high scoring way to play from the inventor himself!

Winning with the Unguardable Flow Offense

with Pat Skerry, Towson University Head Men's Coach;
2022 CAA Regular Season Champions;
Has won at least 18 games per year in 7 of the last 10 years;
2013 CAA Coach of the Year;
Owns the largest single-season turnaround in NCAA Division I men's basketball history (2011-2012 season at Towson);

In this on-the-court instructional coaching video, Pat Skerry, a coach who is well known for his adaptability and proven ability to improve teams, discusses the evolution of his offensive philosophy.

Knowing that change is a part of the game, Skerry evaluated his system and measured it to how the game was being played at that time.

In studying the best college teams in the country, he developed what he calls his Flow Offense.

In this video, you get an inside look into:

  • The Flow Offense.
  • Roles within the offense.
  • Flow Offense actions.
  • Set plays and more!

Flow Offense

Coach Skerry begins by discussing his basketball journey as a coach and how he has changed and adapted over time. Different teams and coaches have impacted his offensive philosophy and helped him to adapt and design the Flow Offense to cater to his players strengths.

Talking about his ‘offensive musts,’ Coach Skerry covers concepts such as how to increase offensive efficiency, how to create better offense with less turnovers and offensive rebounding. He also discusses the importance of having a consistent set of terminology within your program to maximize efficiency.

The Flow Offense starts on a missed shot as players hustle down the floor to their designated spots and start attacking right away. Skerry teaches the roles and responsibilities of each player as they transition into his half-court offense.

As the point guard attacks the elbow, the flow game begins. Following the emphasis to get to the paint first, Skerry discusses why and how this is important to making the offense work.

After the initial attack, playing through the trailer and reversing the ball they get right into the first action of flow game. Setting a double-staggered-screen away, players have many scoring options and reads which Coach Skerry explains and demonstrates in a 5-on-0 setting.

To continue the attacking mentality Coach Skerry shows how to continue the flow and begin multiple ball screens.

Coach Skerry explains how these actions also fit perfectly into a continuity ball-screen offense – and offense that has become very popular at the collegiate level.

Each action is shown and broken down with on court players, including: ‘Chicago Action,’ ‘Ricochet Action’ and ‘Butt-Screen Action,’ just to name a few.

Each action takes advantage of defensive adjustments that occur throughout a game. To show how you can begin to work on all the different sets, Coach Skerry runs a drill called the ‘Missed-Shot Transition Drill’ where groups of five players run through the different sets and calls. This drill offers a perfect teaching opportunity and a great way to see what you will see when trying to put in this offense.

Flow Sets and Actions

Coach Skerry then goes into detail with several sets and actions designed to keep the defense honest. Revisiting the ‘Chicago Action,’ he also shows how to take advantage of a skilled four-player within this play. Demonstrating how to attack the defense when they deny the reversal, Coach Skerry covers a play called, ‘Chicago Action Alternate.’  Skerry also shows several ball-screening actions that can be used to take advantage of your players skills or mismatches, with the plays ‘Flow Get’ and ‘Sides’ and then goes through an effective, explosive play called, ‘Pistol’ that places the defense in tough scenarios.

Finishing with the ‘Stack Series,’ you will learn options for three-point shots, double-ball screens and another great counter that keeps defenses guessing.

Coach Skerry does a great job showing and explaining the Flow Offense, in addition to providing you with actions and set plays that are designed to work against any defense!

Skill Development - the Core of Your Offense Effectiveness

Coach Sean Miller focuses on skill development and his offensive philosophy of wanting to play faster. He believes that the best way to do that is by playing through concepts and having more of a flowing offense where the number of sets or plays that are called is limited.

Miller spends a large portion of time developing skills; things as basic as what pivot to use, catching, and being in a triple threat position. Focus is placed on teaching players how to get open, driving and attacking the basket.

The importance of making your breakdown drills simulate what will happen in an actual game is reiterated over and over. Coach Miller also focuses on: playing off of two feet, reversing the ball quickly and completing great passes.

Pick and Roll Development

Coach Miller reviews how to set screens, cutting with a purpose and being in a good position to set the screen. Miller makes a critically important point - that you must set a screen so that a defender can't go under the screen! Miller then has the players demonstrate different ways to get into the pick and roll action.

Coach Miller also talks about passing and following the ball into the screen, about pitching the ball into the screen and using a dribble handoff (DHO) to set up the action; the demonstrators do an excellent job breaking down each of these actions.

Pick and Roll Offense

You will see how a Sean Miller-coached offense would attack a defense based on how the opponent was guarding the pick and roll. Coach Miller looks specifically at what to do when a team "hard hedges" or traps a pick and roll. Miller gives several breakdowns and concepts for what to do in these types of situations and also looks at how to attack a defense that switches pick and rolls  - and, how to gain advantages based on the mismatches that are created.

This video is great for teams who are trying to learn more about the pick and roll offense and how to develop players to set screens, use screens and attack offensively. You will learn multiple breakdowns and how to implement the different actions and concepts that Coach Miller introduces. The importance of building and developing a high basketball IQ skill set within their program in order to fully maximize an effective pick and roll offense is reinforced throughout.

Coach Sean Miller's expertise in purposeful skill development training and a high-functioning pick-and-roll offense make this a must-have video!

Offensive Strategy Separates Teams

Teaching your players how to play the game and react to what the defense is doing can lead to an unscoutable offense. Mark Byington is one of the best X and O coaches in the game. In this video, Coach Byington demonstrates the drills and principles in his offense that have helped him build a Top 25 program.

Principles

Using 2v0 and 3v0 setup, players are put through a series of drive and kick reactions that will build into a 5v0 alignment.  Through these drills you will teach your players how to react in a 5 out system.  Players will create advantage basketball and be able to push the ball in transition.

When you don't restrict players and let them play, your offense learns to thrive.

In the 5v0 Full Court drill, a coach will toss the ball up and whoever rebounds leads the break.  Coach Byington teaches his principles of Flood, Weak Flood, Drag, and Double Drag.

All of these options are the foundations of transition Flow Offense.

Transition Flood Options

In Flood, players fill to one side to overload the defense in transition.  This concept helps players learn to keep 12-15 feet spacing in transition and use a back screen or middle ball screen so players can attack at a 45 degree angle.

In Weak Flood, players overload one side of the floor by emptying to one side of the floor.  This concept allows the corner helper to not be there on defense.

In Drag and Double Drag, your point guard will love to attack the rim and look for a scoring opportunity with both post players either rolling or popping.  These are all great options to run off of a missed shot

Flow Game

Once your transition game has created a scoring opportunity or been shut down by the defense, you players have to be ready for the play after the play.

This is where Coach Byington starts to develop the 5 Out system in Flow Game.

Players are able to use random ball screens, dribble handoffs, ghost screen action, rip - drive and kick, or cut to the basket for open looks.

This style of play creates a lot of unpredictability for the defense to prepare to defend.  The advantage situations will create a better scoring opportunity for another teammate.  By keeping the principles simple - guard to guard pass/you exchange  - and guard to wing pass/you cut through - you can build so many scoring opportunities on either side of the floor.

By using 4 Out Shell, players can learn to use the actions and move the defense to create gaps.  Coach Byington reinforces - "Don't let the ball stick otherwise you will let the defense catch up to your action".

This offense can lead to big things and lots of points as Byington's teams have found out by averaging close to 80 points per game.

Having an offense that is uncountable and unpredictable can lead to big scoring outputs.

With numerous actions to build into your half court offense your players will love the Flow you can create.  Players will learn to play the game, react to the defense, counter their every move!  You will want to add this video to your offensive collection!

Customer Review: 5 Out 5 Stars! - "Very detailed video that breaks down the Flow Offense into easy to install options.  Players will learn to play off of each other through 2v0 and 3v0 drive and kick options. Some of the best teaching on these concepts I have seen!"

Controlling Game Speed & Tempo with 1-2-2 Press Defense (Plus, Maximizing Shell Drills)

Fordham University Head Coach;
2023 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year;
Fordham Associate Head Coach from 2021 to 2022;
Penn State Assistant Coach from 2012 to 2021;
Villanova Assistant Coach from 2010 to 2012;
Villanova Director of Basketball Operations from 2008 to 2010;
played college basketball for Fairfield

Utilizing a press defense is a way for teams to control tempo and dictate what your opponents can do on the offense. Fordham University's Keith Urgo has created a winning style of play that has helped Fordham finish with back-to-back Top-10 in the nation defensive efficiency ratings.

Through the 1-2-2 press, Coach Urgo highlights the best ways for players to learn the basic rotations to speed up a team that wants to grind out games in the half court and slow down teams that want to use their transition offense to put pressure on your team once they get the ball.

In this video, Urgo shows you proven methods for flowing into your half-court defense and influencing your opponents toward the sideline, baseline and forcing them into tough, highly contested 2-point shots.

Three-Quarter Court, 1-2-2 Press

Good pressing teams understand that it's not about forcing turnovers, but rather, the ultimate goal of a press is to force your preferred type of tempo and impose a specific pace-of-play upon your opponent. By controlling tempo through full- or three-quarter court pressure, you place your opponents in situations that they find difficult or uncomfortable.

Coach Urgo shows how can use the 1-2-2 press to speed up a slow team or slow down a fast team. This style of play is great for your program to dictate a game's tempo toward one that works in your favor. Demonstrating the drills that he uses to teach press rotations, Coach Urgo highlights several that he has found to be effective teaching tools, including a '3-on-3, Full-Court Drill,' where players must communicate with one another on who has the ball and who  is responsible for providing help. In the drill, players must fly around the court and influence the ball handler toward the sideline. With the top person in the press being one of the most important defenders, they have to take small steps towards the ball handler and big steps back to help take away any chance of getting the ball to the middle of the floor.

This style of play is perfect if you are looking to put pressure on your opponents and have it flow directly and smoothly into your half-court defense.

Shell Defense, Defensive Techniques

Being ranked in the Top-10 in the nation for defensive efficiency is no easy task. Doing it two years in a row, showcases your team's dedication and emphasis on defensive pressure. By forcing tough, highly contested 2-point shots, Urgo's teams have consistently displayed a solid half-court defense.

Coach Urgo highlights the best methods for teaching players how to 'help,' 'sink' and 'fill' to protect the paint. Using his version of the 'Shell Drill,' Urgo shares how to teach 'help,' 'sink' and 'fill' techniques.

Beginning with basic positioning and on-ball pressure, you'll learn teaching techniques for playing 'head and hand on the ball' defense and 'swiping up' to force opponents to feel uncomfortable and away from the basketball. Coach Urgo shows how they teach help-side defenders to learn to defend while positioned in a boxing stance and how to keep their head on a swivel, always watching both ball and man.

Learning to properly close out and influence the basketball is a daily habit for Coach Urgo and his program. Urgo shows how they emphasize and teach which hand to close out with proper footwork and how to pressure the basketball as defenders.  By forcing opponents to shoot tough, contested 2-point shots, you will stifle the best shooters and limit your opponent's scoring opportunities.

Coach Urgo has his team playing at the top of the Atlantic 10 Conference and performing as one of the best defensive teams in the country, year-in and year-out. By influencing toward the sideline and baseline, you can create a defense focused on tough, highly contested field goals. Furthermore, by combining tenacious half-court defense with a stifling 1-2-2 three-quarter court press, you'll have a tough defense to play against.

This is a must-watch defensive video for coaches at all levels. Coach Urgo presents the information in an easy-to-follow format that allows you to easily add these schemes into your own defensive system. Plus, your players will love possessing the ability to control the tempo of games and play in a style that best fits their abilities as a team.

Coach Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars. 'This is a really thorough video that describes two different ways to use a 1-2-2 three-quarter court press. I loved the way Coach Urgo presents his half-court shell drill and the emphasis he places on influencing toward the sideline and baseline!'

Coach Robinson has developed a series of 'daily vitamin' drills to help build his half court defense into one of the most efficient defenses.  In this video, Coach Robinson will lead you through the daily drills they do to build championship level defense and create havoc in the half court!

Half Court Defense

Terminology and points of emphasis are important to creating team chemistry.  Understanding and trusting where your teammates are going to be and if they have your back will create confidence and balance with your team.

Coach Robinson teaches the terminology they use to force opponents to the baseline and sideline.  The defense starts with on ball pressure and continues with players being in lock or 1 pass away and denial.  Helpside defenders are moving while the ball is in the air and will help force opponents into the deep corner or jail part of the court.

If a player gets beat off the dribble the goalie needs to be there to meet a driver outside of the paint and take any charges necessary to protect the rim.  Your half court defense cannot be successful without energy from all 5 on the floor!  This will help you install the basic terminology and movement in the half court.

Daily Vitamin Drills

Beginning with Closeouts, Coach Robinson shows how his players will get high hands and closeout to the high side of the defender to influence sideline and baseline.  Players cannot open their hips and allow easy access into the paint, but rather have their head on the players shoulder.

As the ball is swung around, top side help will be on the ball with a closeout and chest up.  In 'chest drill', players are working on jumping from help into on ball pressure and taking a charge with their chest out and hands back.

In '2v2 Energizers', players are going full court working from on ball pressure to helpside defense.  On ball defenders are working to cut off the ball handler and helpside defenders are going to work at getting to the level of the ball.  This is a great drill for teaching sprinting from one spot to the next and controlling the middle of the floor; an excellent conditioning drill that emphasizes man to man principles.

In 'Big 3 Drill', players have to get a wall up, vertical contest, and take a charge.  This drill is one of the best defensive drills that teaches technique and how to be in the proper position and is one that brings high energy to your practices!  This is a must have drill to add to your package of drills to help build toughness and grit to get that stop when you need one!

Building your defense brick by brick begins with consistent defensive drills.  Building the fundamentals of your defense will help your team play solid lock down defense.  Through 'Daily Vitamin' drills, your players will feel confident they can stop any high powered offense and force them to play right into your game plan!  Coach Robinson will help guide you to bring the energy and effort to your practices everyday!

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 Stars! 'Excellent video for understanding how to build a solid defense.  Coach Robinson's Daily Vitamins are the perfect combination of technique and fundamentals.  You will love adding these drills to your program! '

The game is played full court. More and more teams, based on analytics, are taking advantage of the transition game. Putting pressure on the defense by playing fast has helped Coach Lindy La Rocque become one of the most successful programs in the country.

In this video you will see how Coach La Rocque  installs her system and gets players to run!

You'll get:

  • Two variations of the fast break (loaded and balanced)
  • Player roles and positioning
  • Drills that place an emphasis on getting the best shot

Introduction

To begin with, Coach La Rocque explains why they run transition offense and poses several questions a coach needs to consider before playing this style. La Rocque discusses how they structure their break and where they position players; emphasizing that many of these concepts are player and talent driven, La Rocque puts players where they can succeed the most based on their skill set.

Coach La Rocque also outlines a balanced floor vs a loaded floor in transition. Very similar to a two-sided break, the loaded floor provides many scoring options for a fast point guard or a dominant post player.

Installing a Fast-Paced System

After describing a balanced vs a loaded floor, Coach La Rocque shows how to run the Tippers and Sliders drill which gets players in scenarios where they experience both kinds.

To begin, the players are put through a balanced floor which is more traditional. During these drills actions are scripted to help them begin to learn the different reads and scoring options. Following the balanced floor, players are then shown the loaded floor within the same drill.

The next portion of the video includes drills that show how Coach La Rocque builds up her transition offense and gets players to make reads at a high pace while looking for the advantage.

  • The Transition Buildup drill begins with a two on one and progresses to five on five.
  • The Quick Strike drill is a great way to condition your team while learning the system. A very competitive drill, it will get your players in a competitive game where they will learn how to hunt the best shot as quickly as possible.
  • To conclude, Coach La Roque shares the 4 on 3 Scramble drill which gets players to find the advantage and attack the advantage.

Coach La Rocque has taken her team to new heights in a short period of time; her transition offense is one of the many weapons she has deployed to create a formidable high-scoring team game after game, season after season. With this terrific video, you will learn how La Rocque sets up this high-octane offense and prepare to employ it with your own team in the seasons ahead!

Longtime head coach Kelvin Sampson has coached at every level. From guiding Oklahoma to the 2002 Final Four to several years as a coach in the NBA, he has coached some of the best in the game and gotten the most out of them.  Sampson has guided the Houston Cougars back to greatness over the past few seasons taking them to two Sweet 16's, 1 Elite Eight, and 1 Final Four. All of this has been done through reinforcement of simple principles and teachings every day in practice.

In this terrific Open Practice video session, Coach Sampson takes you through a deep dive into how they have used Shell Drill to build their defense into a powerful, recurring nightmare for opposing teams plus an excellent 'game shots at game speed' session that will invigorate your ideas for your own team's shooting practice!!

Game Shots at Game Speed

Coach Sampson demonstrates a variety of warm up shooting drills and breakdown shooting drills to teach actions within their offense.

In 3 Man Weave Shooting, all three players will get a shot up within their range and move quickly.  This allows players to flow into transition offense and look for shots they will get up in game play.

Once loose, you will see a variety of actions Houston uses within their half court offense. From Shake Shots for a throw back 3 off of a pick and roll to Pop Shots looking for the post player rolling off of the pick and roll you will learn the terminology used in today's game to go along with dynamic actions to add to your offense.

Shell Drill

A staple in everyone's practice, Shell Drill is where defensive principles are taught!

Players learn the basic movements of helpside defense. Defenses learn to become a team and play together as one.  As Coach Sampson refers to it, "Shell Drill is the Genesis of defense!"

In this practice session, you will see players actively learning how to do their job.  Beginning with simple positioning Sampson shows you how to build up to 5v5 live play all while stopping and instructing players on where they need to be.  That emphasis will help players stop Baseline drives, slot drives, and wing drives.  If your teammate gets beat, learn when and where to rotate and stunt over preventing easy paint touches.

As Sampson puts it, post players get in foul trouble when we don't rotate.  This is no ordinary Shell Drill - this Shell Drill demonstrates the complete build of Sampson's vaunted defense!

Being one of the top teams in the country year after year requires a certain level of defense and this video is where you will see how Sampson and staff emphasize rotations and helpside defense.

It's no secret why Kelvin Sampson-coached teams become among the top teams in the country year after year - it's the lock down defense -  practiced relentlessly - that makes them tough to score on!  From a simple closeout that sticks the high hand to learning how to move as a team in shell drill, Sampson's defense is superior!  In this information-packed Open Practice video, Sampson lays out the steps needed to build a top level defense.  You won't want to miss out on this detailed breakdown of how to play team defense!

Customer Review: 5 out of 5 stars

"It is a treat to watch Coach Sampson and his attention to detail on defense using shell drill.  A must-have for any coach looking to gain an edge on defense! This is my new go-to video for improving our defensive practices!"

Grand Canyon University Head Women's Basketball Coach;
Drury University Head Coach from 2014 to 2020;2x WBCA Division II Coach of the Year (2019, 2020);
Undefeated season (32-0) in 2020;
2019 NCAA D II Final Four;
Fourth-highest career winning percentage among active women's Division I coaches (.846);
In 2022-2023 season, GCU ranked 4th nationally for steals per game (12.6 per game)

Believing in the tenets of ferocious defense, Molly Miller, the head women’s basketball coach at Grand Canyon University, shows why she has turned around her school’s program in just three-years in this instructional coaching video with on-the-court demonstrations.

Playing an aggressive, smothering defense, both at Grand Canyon University and during her career at Drury University, her teams have consistently ranked among the top teams in steals and forced turnovers.

This video is a great opportunity for coaches to see firsthand the attention to detail and high-energy, on-the-court style that have made Coach Miller one of the most successful coaches in the country.

Coach Miller works with players to master the details of on-ball coverage and how to channel the offensive player into areas where they are susceptible to double-teaming.

Coach Miller insists on a high level of energy and effort from her players and the energy and enthusiasm she brings to the court working with players is on display throughout this video.

Successful Defense & Terminology

An integral part of teaching the defense that Coach Miller espouses is the emphasis on memorable and impactful terminology, and in watching her presentation, you will learn excellent phrasing and defensive cues that will stick with and resonate with your players.

Miller showcases the impactful coaching cues that instantly signal to players how to adjust their defensive stance and assigned positions within the defense and also defines core terms and phrases to assist a player’s learning curve and reinforce the importance of body language and energy.

Full Court On-the-Ball Defense

Coach Miller guides you through the building blocks of her full-court and half-court defenses and shares several highly effective drills that improve the process with a unique teaching innovation that separates the skills into four quarters of learning. Each skill taught builds upon the other and every skill learned is an essential part of on-the-ball defense.

Every quarter that Coach Miller outlines utilizes a key term that emphasizes the action. For example, ‘block-the-ball” teaches players to have active hands and learn how to effectively dig the cross over and create more deflections.

Miller also explains the zone-identifications she uses on the court that help teach her full-court press. Each zone signifies to players how and when to trap and rotate. Zones include the Green, Red, and Yellow Zones.

The fourth quarter phase is a ‘free for all;’ offensive players and defensive players go unscripted – to simulate live-game situations  - and to prove that they can apply all the things just learned.

Defensive Conditioning: Mind and Body, Ball-Screen Defense

Coach Miller is a proponent of training the whole body and mind when teaching defensive techniques. Typically, a portion of their pre-practice time is used to work on and reinforce these habits.

Miller shares drills and exercises that work on several phases of her half-court defense. From blocking the ball to backdoor cuts, this segment is packed with powerful information.

Coach Miller also highlights her favorite ball-screen coverages, which she explains are used to maintain continuous pressure and to stay aggressive. Trapping techniques and rotations are all covered.

This intensive defensive video is an excellent follow-up to Coach Miller’s wildly popular first video (Suffocating Pressure Defense Drills to Turbo-Charge Individual & Team Defense!) and is a great learning tool for all levels of basketball. If you are looking for ways to increase your team's pressure defense and learn some new teaching techniques and terminology, this is a must-see video!

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 Stars.  ‘This is a TERRIFIC coaching video. Coach Miller is rapidly becoming one of my all-time favorite defensive coaches. She offers excellent skills and drills work, and her terminology lessons are sure to stick and resonate with players at all levels.’

Training your players for basketball conditioning, speed, and agility is important in today's game.  With basketball being a game of stop, go, twists, turns, and other various movements, players have to be properly trained. Andrea Hudy has been training athletes with incredible success since 1995 and has built a reputation of being one of the best in today's game.

In this fantastic video, Coach Hudy will share multiple drills that will have players working on game-like actions and help them become the best version of themselves on the court.

Dynamic Warmup

Every game and action begins with properly stretching, loosening, and warming up your muscles.  Getting them to fire on all cylinders at a high rate is the goal.  In this on court dynamic warmup, players will go through a series of motions with precise detail.  Coach Hudy will show you how to walk your team through each stretch and movement so you know how to properly warm up your athletes.  By doing all of the warm up through walking, skipping, and running your players will learn how to build up their muscles and prepare them for explosive actions.

Speed and Agility

Building players speed and ability to cut can give them an advantage.  Little things can separate your players from the competition.  Using speed ladders and mini hurdles your players will learn how to bound, hop, jump, and have quick feet.  In ladder hops, players are using one leg to work on explosiveness and strengthening their ankles and feet just as they would in the weight room.  By putting in work on the court, your players can mimic what they would do in the weight room and help build actions on the court.  Using hurdle drills, players will learn how to properly jump and land soft to help prevent injury all while creating explosive action to jump up and either get a rebound or get into their shooting motion.

Cone Drills

Every coach can benefit by employing useful cone drills that help to mimic players movements on the court.  From defensive stance to stop and go turning, cone drills have been a staple in developing players' reactions.  Coach Hudy demonstrates a variety of drills using cones, but also explains how you can use variations in your practices to help train athletes to be at peak basketball performance.  In acceleration drills, players are learning to use both feet to change or switch directions.  Players have to start with a different foot each time they go in the drill.  By starting with a hop in place, the coach can teach them to wait for the reaction and push off with their inside foot.   This works explosively as players sprint from baseline to free throw or half court.  Building from individual cone drills to relay races using a tennis ball or towel, Hudy works to make these drills fun and competitive.  This can help build team chemistry as players are competing against each other.

Conditioning

Training players to sprint and turn in different directions will help them be prepared for any twisting and turning the game brings.  Using heavy conditioning at the end of your workout helps build toughness and teach players to push through late in the game.  Coach Hudy uses 22's to help train players in the full court.  In 22's coach gives players commands and which way they should turn as they sprint from one end to the other.  By giving players a 1 minute break in between she will help build their endurance and train players in stop and go like actions. Finishing with a 55, coach combines all of her heavy conditioning to make players sprint from the free throw all the way to the opposite end in 55 seconds.

Preparing players to play at a high speed and be able to turn and twist in game-like actions gives players an advantage.  Speed and agility training has helped build today's basketball player into a machine on the court.  Coach Hudy is one of the best at working with basketball players and training them to play at high performance.  You will love the on court drills and simple instruction coach provides to train your players!

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 stars - 'Coach Hudy takes drills that players might normally dread and turns them into competitive drills and relay races making them competitive.  Your players will love conditioning with competition!'
